Living Lab

Being part of the pilot project, JKUAT SEED Centre, in collaboration with Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and Narok County government are in the process of establishing a 12Kwp mini-grid at Olderkesi trade centre – Narok west constituency.

The mini-grid which will act as a Living Lab aims to reach a population of approximately 500 inhabitants, with the estimated energy distribution covering Domestic Use (30%), Commercial Use (40%) and Social Use (30%) within the shopping centre

Proposed area (circled in red) where the living lab will be installed.

Through energy provision, the living lab will expand the community’s engagement in economic activities that are dependent on energy supply and spur entrepreneurship activities through an energy, water and food nexus. Additionally, the lab will also partner with community members via a locally formed cooperative society in conducting capacity building training sessions aimed at enhancing business management skills of the members.

During the initial engagement of the community by the SEED and REREC team.

Through REREC, nominated members from the community will be trained on handling technical issues emerging during operation of the mini grid.

The living lab aims at using locally sourced bio mass and high solar PV exposure experience in the area hence creating research opportunities for students to acquire practical and experiential Knowledge in generation, use, management and storage of clean energy.
