The Farm Department has 3 sections namely; Crops, Livestock and Farm Workshop.
Farm workshop
All farm machinery, tools, implements and plant equipments are domiciled here. Services offered include; excavation, loading, ploughing, drainage clearance, harrowing, chaff cutting, forage harvesting, and side mowing and bailing among others. The section is also incharge of pumping water for both domestic and irrigation usage.
Livestock Section
Involved in rearing of different livestock including dairy, poultry, piggery and fish farming. Extension services are also offered to visiting students and farmers. Demonstration to faculty of agriculture students.
Crops Section
Mainly the section grows food crops for sale to JKUAT main Kitchen, JKUAT Hospital members of staff and external customers. These include maize, beans, vegetables, fruits etc. The section also hosts the Institute of Biotechnology (IBR) demonstration, students trials and researchers trials. It also offers demonstration to both our students, external students and visiting farmers.
OBJECTIVES
- To improve on Farm Machinery Operations
- To produce high quality food crops to meet the University market demand
- To maintain a healthy and high quality livestock unit to produce quality products for the market demand
Core activities carried out
Activities which are carried out in the department include; excavation, loading, ploughing, drainage clearance, harrowing, chaff cutting, forage harvesting, and side mowing and bailing among others. Also there are activities like food crop production, milk, beef, pork and fish production.
Current ongoing projects
The department has projects which are ongoing such as fish farming, pig rearing and poultry keeping.
Outstanding achievements
The department has been able to supply milk, pork, beef and food crops to internal and external customers. It has also been able to offer farm machinery activities to other departments and also the Juja community at large.
