The senior technologist equally had a chance to visit Okayama University’s Advanced Research Centre and the Institute of Plant Science and Resources; Bizen Chemical Co. Ltd, among others on benchmarking mission. The practice in these institutions, according to Paul, is bringing together highly specialized multidisciplinary equipment under one roof to facilitate high level research; something he strongly suggests should be adopted in JKUAT/PAUSTI. Save for research areas, it was no different for Grace whose training was on molecular biology and genetic engineering. Working with four supervisors she acquired hands-on experience, cementing her knowledge in animal and plant cell towards African Innovation (ai). “I had a chance to practically try out some of the concepts I had only mastered theoretically. It has given me the confidence to effectively guide researchers on various procedures within molecular biology,” avers Grace. In particular, Grace learnt about tissue and organ harvesting, DNA/RNA extraction, histological and cytological analysis, and Immunohistochemistry. “Following the training I can now participate in a number of interventions in areas such as food security, disease diagnostics, biodiversity conservation and Design and drug development. All these areas are important to the Africa’s development quest,” adds Grace.
