The Innovation Centre for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (iCMoB) is domiciled in the College of Health Sciences (CoHES) and the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (CoPAS), is instrumental in spearheading modern molecular biology and biotechnology innovations in Africa. The center, which started in 2014 undertakes innovative activities aimed at understanding the molecular basis of biological activity in organisms (micro-organisms, human, animals and plants) to enhance the development of solutions to meet human needs.

The membership of iCMoB sub-taskforce is mainly drawn from staff of departments under College of Health Sciences (CoHES) and College of Pure and Applied Sciences (CoPAS) as shown below;

The key areas of research and innovation in the centre include Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Food Technology. In collaboration with the Innovation Centre for Bio-resources (iCB), iCMoB implements analytical research platform in diverse agricultural fields such as biotechnology and genetic engineering; postharvest handling as well as value addition of agricultural produce.

One of the key projects being undertaken by iCMoB is about the prevalence, risk factors and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of mastitis-causing bacteria among dairy goats in Kiambu and Nyeri Counties. This project is aimed at identifying the resistance bacteria in both clinical and sub-clinical mastitis that affects milk production and quality in dairy goats. This will show the need for new effective antimicrobials which can be used in the treatment of mastitis. Other research undertaken at iCMoB involve aquaculture and marine biology.

The center also offers short courses and training on Animal Handling and Husbandry, Basic Molecular Biology Techniques, Microbiological Techniques and Bioinformatics. The courses and trainings are done in state-of-the-art facilities (SAFARI and molecular biology laboratory at PAUSTI).

iCMoB is equally keen to partner with both local and international companies, universities and research institutions in coming up with viable molecular biology and biotechnology techniques and solutions that can be used to help the center achieve its vision and mission.

Vision: To be an innovative hub in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

Mission: To improve the research environment in the areas of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Microbiology.
